Background of the Study
The rise of big data has revolutionized business operations, enabling organizations to make data-driven decisions, predict trends, and enhance productivity. However, the ethical implications of collecting, storing, and using large datasets have become increasingly important. Issues such as data privacy, consent, transparency, and the potential for misuse of information have raised significant concerns, particularly in countries with developing regulatory frameworks like Nigeria (Bello & Ibrahim, 2024).
Corporate organizations in Nasarawa State are leveraging big data to optimize business processes and enhance competitiveness. However, the lack of robust data protection laws and a culture of ethical data practices poses risks to both individuals and organizations. This study examines the state of big data ethics among corporate organizations in Nasarawa State, focusing on compliance, challenges, and best practices.
Statement of the Problem
The unethical handling of big data can lead to privacy violations, data breaches, and reputational damage for businesses. In Nigeria, the absence of comprehensive data protection legislation, coupled with limited awareness of big data ethics, exacerbates these risks. Corporate organizations in Nasarawa State often face challenges in balancing the benefits of big data with the need for ethical practices (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023).
Despite the global discourse on big data ethics, little attention has been given to the Nigerian business context, where regulatory gaps and cultural differences present unique challenges. This study addresses this gap by exploring the ethical dimensions of big data use among corporate organizations in Nasarawa State.
